Health Call
Prostate Cancer Kills
I was initiated Spring 1970 in Mu Omicron Chapter, Life Member #2167, and served the Fraternity for over 42 years. I am a former 12th District State Representative for Washington and Oregon and 12th District Keeper of Records and Seals. I have served as a stand in for our Founders on several occasions. I am an active member of Lambda Gamma Gamma Chapter Ft. Meade, Maryland.
I am a Prostate Cancer Survivor since 2008. I have dedicated my life to raising Prostate Cancer Awareness and to the uplift of brothers and men in general. I was honored with a once in a lifetime opportunity to address all Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. brothers gathered at the 2012 Conclave held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the 100 Year Celebration 2011 held in Washington, DC. Brothers are around the world in chapters are still talking about the inspirational messages presented at the 100 Year Celebration in Washington, DC and the Minneapolis , Minnesota Conclave about Prostate Cancer Awareness.
In my presentations I remind brothers of our four Cardinal Principles:
Manhood: Go to the doctor and get checked on a regular basis. 50% OF WHAT WE WORRY ABOUT IS NOT A PROBLEM.
Scholarship: Knowledge is power. Be sure to research medical information before your visit to the doctor. If you don’t know your rights…You don’t have any.
Perseverance: Follow good medical advice. SEE IT THROUGH.
Uplift: Be a role model to help other brothers and their families. LIFTING AS WE CLIMB
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month; I challenge all men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity to wear the Blue Ribbon lapel pin that represents Prostate Cancer Awareness. The Blue Ribbon worn in your lapel will speak more than words can say, demonstrating support for cancer survivors in our fraternity, other men, and their families.
The National Cancer Institute recent research states that over 210,000 men were diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and better than 90% of them were cancer survivors in 2010. African American men are at a higher risk for Prostate Cancer. Men with a history of Prostate Cancer in their families are at a high risk as well. They should start getting checked at 30 years of age. Other men should start getting checked between 30 or 35 years of age by personal choice. Our greatest challenge remains to find the answers to the questions of Prostate Cancer in family history and why African American men are at a higher risk. I believe that working together we can eradicate Prostate Cancer. Our focus should be on prevention and treatment for all men.
I am amazed at the number of brothers that are Prostate Cancer survivors and others that are seeking information. We are having more open conversations about Prostate Cancer education, research, and prevention in the past five years thanks to our mandated Health Initiative. Also, many brothers are giving personal testimonies in chapter meetings about health challenges that they are facing to help other brothers.
In my book “Now is the time to Heal” I share how I changed my life style with better eating habits, exercising, resting, and regular medical checkups with my team of doctors. Many brothers in chapters around the world read and share the book with others. A must read book.
